CMA Mentioned in the November 6 Issue of the South Florida Business Journal

CMA was featured in the November 6 issue of the South Florida Business Journal (SFBJ) as part of the “Secrets to an Engaged Workforce” roundtable discussion. According to the panelists, culture is a common theme that makes an organization a best place to work. On February 20, CMA was named as an SFBJ “Best Places to Work” firm at the awards program held at the Signature Grand. The program recognized small, medium and large companies deemed by their employees to be the “Best Places to Work” in South Florida.

 

“The consistent application of culture is essential. For example, we value open and transparent communication and apply that to everything we do,” stated CMA President Peter Moore, P.E., F.ASCE, ENV SP, LEED AP. “I’m just happy to know that we have happy employees.” Vice President Jose L. Acosta, P.E., F.ASCE attended the virtual event.

 

On October 1, CMA was also named the SFBJ’s ‘Business of the Year’ in the $3 million - $24 million category.  Congratulations to our entire team!

CMA Staff Volunteer at Coastal Cleanup

On Saturday, October 24, CMA staff participated in the annual International Coastal Cleanup held at South Inlet Park in Boca Raton with the South Florida Spear Fishing Club. Staff who volunteered were Rex Robinson (team captain), Safiya Brea, P.E., LEED AP, David Cowan, P.E., Charmaine Emanuels, E.I., Diego Jara Li, Nicole Mancini, Daniela Montoya, Karen Rachles and Carlos Tijerino. CMA Helps Sponsor Port Everglades Association Golf Tournament

CMA staff Jose L. Acosta, P.E., F.ASCE, Jason McClair, P.E., CFM, LEED AP, Gregory Mendez, P.E. and Eddie Suarez, PSM (subconsultant) participated in the Port Everglades Association Golf Tournament as a foursome sponsor on Friday, October 16. The event was held at the Plantation Preserve Golf Course and Club.

Peter Moore, P.E., F.ASCE, ENV SP, LEED AP Organized Meeting with Senator Wilton Simpson

CMA President Peter Moore, P.E., F.ASCE, ENV SP, LEED AP helped to organize a Virtual Legislative Town Hall with Incoming Florida Senate President on October 13. Senator Wilton Simpson is a proponent of water resources funding and the environment. The webinar was hosted by the Florida Engineering Society of which Peter served as past president and is a current member.

CMA Staff Presents on Septic-to-Sewer

On October 9, Senior Engineer Robert Best, P.E. and Senior Engineer/West Palm Beach Branch Manager Suzanne Dombrowski, P.E., ENV SP presented to the ASCE Florida Section Meeting via MS Teams. The topic was “Septic-to-Sewer.” The duo presented on septic to sewer projects which are occurring throughout the State of Florida to protect coastal waters, rivers, and springheads from unintended wastewater discharge from septic systems. This presentation reviewed current and proposed regulations as they relate the protection of these waterbodies, different options for abandoning septic systems and connecting to sewer systems, permitting, and funding sources. The presentation also reviewed case studies from around the State.

CMA was named SFBJ’s 2020 Business of the Year in the $3 million - $24 million category. The event was held virtually on Thursday. This program honors companies that set the standard for growth, service, quality, innovation and execution of a superb business strategy. Congratulations!

Jennifer Smith, P.E. Receives ASCE Region 5 Young Civil Engineer of the Year Award

CMA Senior Engineer Jennifer Smith, P.E. was named ASCE’s Region 5 Young Civil Engineer of the Year for 2020. The award is presented to a young civil engineer who has demonstrated leadership and made significant contributions to public service engineering. The virtual officer installation and awards ceremony was held September 30. In addition, Jessica Diaz, E.I. was named treasurer for the ASCE Broward branch. Congratulations!

Jose L. Acosta, P.E., F.ASCE Named Vice President FES Miami Chapter

CMA Vice President Jose L. Acosta, P.E., F.ASCE was sworn in as vice president of the Florida Engineering Society’s (FES) Miami Chapter on Thursday. The event was held virtually. FES supports engineering education, advocates licensure, promotes the ethical and competent practice of engineering, and enhances the image and well-being of all engineers in the state of Florida; and furthers the public’s knowledge and understanding of the importance of the profession. https://fesmiami.org/contact-us/

CMA Named South Florida Top Workplaces 2020 Honoree

CMA has been named a South Florida Top Workplaces 2020 Honoree by the Sun Sentinel. CMA was recognized at the Top Workplaces Awards event held virtually on September 17 and ranked 15 out of 47 in the Small Employer Group. CMA was also featured in the September 20 edition of the Sun Sentinel in the annual Top Workplaces special section. Being named a Top Workplace is a big deal and only 90 companies made this year’s list that is based solely on employee feedback gathered through a third-party survey administered by employee engagement technology partner Energage, LLC. The anonymous survey uniquely measures 15 drivers of engaged cultures that are critical to the success of any organization: including alignment, execution, and connection, just to name a few. Cris Betancourt, RLA, AICP Accepted to ULI Leadership Institute Program

Congratulations to CMA's Director of Landscape Architecture and Planning, Cris Betancourt, RLA, AICP on his acceptance to the Urban Land Institute’s Southeast Florida/Caribbean Leadership Institute Program. The Leadership Institute is an immersive and engaging leadership program that educates emerging leaders and prepares them with the tools to solve South Florida’s most critical real estate and land use issues. The program, which includes 8 full-day programs from January 2021 to August 2021, is a leadership development program that cultivates leadership and life-strategy skills by teaching emerging leaders in the real estate and land use industries how the Southeast Florida/Caribbean region gets built.

FRPA Annual Conference

August 31-September 3

CMA staff members Vice President Jose L. Acosta, P.E., F.ASCE, Senior Engineer Robert Best, P.E. and Senior Landscape Architect Jason Sutton, RLA staffed our booth at the Florida Recreation and Park Association (FRPA) Annual Conference and Exhibit Show while practicing social distancing. The event was held August 31 to September 3 in Orlando and drew 150 delegates. FRPA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion, preservation, and advocacy of the Parks, Recreation, and Leisure Services profession. www.frpa.org

CMA Associate Engineer Carlos Tijerino Named ASCE Miami Dade Chapter President

Congratulations to CMA Associate Engineer Carlos Tijerino who was installed as President of the Miami-Dade Branch of ASCE on August 27. Carlos works in the field civil engineering with a focus on construction managements. His expertise includes project administration, procurement, and construction management of site development projects and structural restoration projects. The Miami-Dade Branch is a subsidiary of the Florida Section, grouped under Region 5 of the American Society of Civil Engineers with over 900 members in the Miami area.

CMA Team Participated in the Annual Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run

August 19-23

CMA participated in the TeamFootworks Annual Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run this year.  The virtual event was held from August 19-23 and included a virtual live kick-off and warm-up session on August 19 in Miami. Team members were able to complete their 3.1 mile run or walk from a location of their choice. CMA team members were: Andres R. (wife Kiara), David, Greg, Jennifer C., Joel, Justin, Karen, Rex, Safiya and Teresa. CMA is proud to have ranked 24th place in the Multi-Discipline category of the Zweig Group Best Firms to Work For Awards and 62nd place in the Hot Firms list. The Best Firms award celebrates top architecture, engineering, planning, environmental and construction (AEC) firms based on firm culture, workplace practices, employee benefits, employee retention rates, professional development, and more, from both management and staff perspective. Awards were given in multiple categories based on firm size and discipline. Firms are ranked on the Hot Firms list by a score comprised of both dollar and percentage revenue growth rate over a three-year period. Winners will be honored at the 2020 Elevate AEC Conference in Denver, CO, September 30-October 2 and at Zweig Group’s Virtual Elevate AEC Conference on October 16.  Thank you to our entire staff for completing the survey and congratulations!

CMA Associate Engineer Madeley Arriola Guerrero, E.I. volunteered at the Hagen Ranch Road Library for the National Engineers Week: Be a Pioneer for Progress program.  29 people were in attendance.  Madeley gave a presentation about “What is engineering? And How to become one?” She also helped lead the group in making Bristlebots!

CMA Named as an SFBJ 'Best Places To Work Firm'

CMA was named as one of the ‘Best Places to Work’ at the South Florida Business Journal’s Best Places to Work in South Florida awards program.  The event was held at The Signature Grand in Davie on Thursday, February 20. The awards program recognized small, medium and large companies deemed by their employees to be the ‘Best Places to Work’ in South Florida. More than 500 professionals attended the event. CMA Participates In Broward Fourth Annual Engineer for a Day Event

Chen Moore and Associates staff participated in the ASCE Broward Fourth Annual Engineer for a Day event on February 12. The student outreach program was created to encourage high school students to consider civil engineering as a future career field. The day was divided up into two sessions. The morning session was hosted at the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 4 offices in Fort Lauderdale, where students interacted with local engineering university students, professors and other professional engineers, where they learned about the academic requirements necessary for completing an engineering degree and general information in the engineering field. In the afternoon session, the students split up into smaller groups and toured local engineering firms, including Chen Moore and Associates’ Fort Lauderdale office. SMPS South Florida Paint & Sip Networking Social

CMA staff attended the SMPS South Florida Paint & Sip Networking Social on February 11. CMA also donated to the event, which was held at Art Sea Living in Boynton Beach. A portion of the proceeds from the event benefitted Girls 2 Women.

CMA Attends UGA College of Environment + Design Career Fair

On February 11, CMA Director of Planning and Landscape Architecture Cris Betancourt, RLA, AICP and Landscape Architect Stefan Bortak, RLA, CID staffed a table at the UGA College of Environment + Design Career Fair at the University of Georgia. Attendees included undergraduate and graduate students in UGA's LAAB-accredited landscape architecture program who have a comprehensive understanding of design, including coursework in garden design, community design, urban design and regional planning. http://career.uga.edu/hireuga

On February 8, CMA staff participated in the Miami-Dade ASCE Field Day at Zoo Miami benefitting local students studying civil engineering. CMA was an event sponsor and finished in third place overall! Attendees included Greg Mendez, P.E., Patrick Kaimrajh, P.E., Sathvika Ramaji, E.I., Nick Karpathy, E.I., Carlos Tijerino, Manny Caamano, Jazmin Cruz, and Chris Donnelly. CMA staff Peter Moore, P.E., F.ASCE, ENV SP, LEED AP, Jose L. Acosta, P.E., F.ASCE, Brent Whitfield, P.E., ENV SP and Patrick Kaimrajh, P.E. attended FES Professional Engineer Legislative Days in Tallahassee this week at the Florida State Capitol. The group met legislators including Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez, Senator Ana María Rodriguez, Senator Jason Pizzo (38th District), Representative Joe Geller (100th District), Representative Dan Daley (97th District), Representative Rick Roth (District 85), Representative Joe Casello (District 90) and Representative David Silvers (District 87). https://www.fleng.org/page/PELegislativeDays

CMA Staff Participates in Future City Competition

CMA Vice President Jose L. Acosta, P.E., F.ASCE served as co-chair and Senior Engineer Patrick Kaimrajh, P.E. and Associate Engineer Carlos Tijerino served as judges for the Future City Competition held January 11 at FIU College of Engineering. Future City is a project-based learning program where students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future. This year there were 11 local teams competing for top prizes and six special awards.

 

St Hugh Catholic School was the winning school and is pictured with other co-chair Dave Clarke of Stantec, the Dean of the College Engineering at FIU and the Assistant Dean (Dr Osama Mohammed) who served as the lead for the SE Region of Future Cities. NASA of the Vehicle Assembly Building Dedication Ceremony

January 10

CMA President Peter Moore, P.E., F.ASCE, ENV SP, LEED AP presented a dedication at NASA of the Vehicle Assembly Building designating it as an ASCE National Historic Landmark to the NASA Director.  Kevin J. Thibault, Secretary of the Florida Department of Transportation and other CMA staff members were in attendance.  

CMA 2019 Philanthropic Activities

In 2019, Chen Moore and Associates continued to participate in community service projects throughout the Tri-County area and we look forward to how we can help our communities in 2020! Our projects from last year include:

  • Adopt a Family – Provided holiday gifts for a family in need in West Palm Beach

  • United Way  –  Supported the United Way green initiative and participated in the 28th Annual Day of Caring in Broward County

  • Making Strides Against Breast Cancer – Raised $526 towards breast cancer research and participated in the events in Fort Lauderdale and Miami

  • Wear Pink Day – To support breast cancer awareness

  • Quantum House – Prepared and served meals to families whose children are receiving treatment in Palm Beach County for serious medical conditions.

  • International Coastal Cleanup – Beach cleanup at El Pardo Park in Lauderdale-By-The Sea

  • ACE Mentor Program – Participated in the after-high school program to mentor students interested in the field of engineering

  • FES Golf Tournament – Sponsored a team to play and raise money for student scholarships.

  • ASCE Bowl-A-Thon – Sponsored two teams to play and raise money for student scholarships

  • Hurricane Donations - Collected items of need for Hurricane Dorian victims in the Bahamas

  • Back-to-School Drive – Collected school supplies to benefit the Broward Education Foundation School Supply Center program

  • HOPE South Florida – Volunteered feeding homeless people through the Shared Meal Program and clothing donations

  • Habitat for Humanity – Prepared infrastructure at new Habitat Houses

  • Relay For Life – Started fundraiser and raised money for American Cancer Society

  • Broward Partnership Breaking Bread Program - Served dinner to those living in the Broward Partnership Shelter and also prepared sandwiches

  • Kayak Community Cleanup - Volunteers teamed in kayaks and collected eight burlap sacks of waste along Pelican Island in Miami

  • SMPS/ABC Cares Foundation - Participated in and donated to the SMPS South Florida Paint & Sip Networking Social at Uptown Art Boca Raton to benefit ABC Cares Foundation  

  • Palm Beach County Food Bank/CANstruction - CMA teamed with Johnson-Davis Construction to participate in this fundraising competition; a design out of food cans were built and then donated to the PBC Food Bank

  • FES Broward Equestrian Volunteer Program - Assisted Equine-Assisted Therapies of South Florida; the group raised and leveled the barn and installed new scratching posts

  • Feeding South Florida – Participated in the Annual Outrun Hunger 5K Event

  • Paddleboarding/Trash Cleanup in Miami - Participated in a paddle boarding/kayaking trash cleanup at Morningside Park in Miami
