CMA Donates to Adopt-A-Family

December 20, 2019

CMA sponsored a young family of four living in Palm Beach County, as part of the Adopt-A-Family program. Adopt-A-Family’s mission is to strengthen families with children in their efforts to achieve stability and self-sufficiency by providing access to all-encompassing services. Since 1983, Adopt-A-Family has grown into the largest service provider for homeless families in Palm Beach County -- providing access to services for more than 2,000 families with children per year.

CMA Staff Participates in Broward United Way Day of Caring

December 18, 2019

CMA continued our tradition of helping those in need this holiday season by participating in the Broward United Way Day of Caring event on December 18 at the BB&T Center in Sunrise. Our team included Jennifer Smith, P.E.; Johanna Zona; Megan Schmidt; Jazmin Cruz; Safiya Brea, P.E., LEED AP; Charmaine Emanuels, E.I.; and Rex Robinson. The team assisted in preparing oatmeal package meals. The event prepared over 300,000 food packages and boxed meals that will be delivered to local food banks and feeding pantries through United Way’s Project Lifeline program. CMA Annual Holiday Party Celebrated in Fort Lauderdale

Our CMA annual holiday party was held on December 13 at the Riverside Hotel in Fort Lauderdale. The evening included a welcome speech from Peter and a year-in-review slide show, reliving both firm and employee milestones throughout 2019. A photo booth with holiday props was also available for everyone’s enjoyment.  Thank you to the Social Activities Committee for planning the event!

CMA sponsored the FES Broward Legislative Breakfast at the Tower Club in Fort Lauderdale on December 4th. State Representatives Dan Daley and Chip LaMarca from districts 97 and 93, respectfully, attended to discuss key issues for the upcoming 2020 Legislative Agenda. The topics discussed included defending the practice of engineering, CCNA, Florida’s Transportation Infrastructure, Water Infrastructure, Environmental Issues, Energy and Technology, and Florida Statutes 471. The event was organized by CMA President Peter Moore, P.E., F.ASCE, ENV SP, LEED AP and Associate Engineer Vince Locigno, E.I. and attended by CMA Chairman of the Board Dr. Ben Chen, P.E., BCEE and staff members Jose L. CMA Reps Attended Florida Tax Watch

December 2-4, 2019

CMA President Peter Moore P.E., F.ASCE, ENV SP, LEED AP; Vice President Jose L. Acosta, P.E., F.ASCE; CMA Board of Directors member Ray Monteleone; and CMA Board of Directors member John Zumwalt attended the Florida Tax Watch’s 40th Anniversary celebration, conference and meetings at the Breakers in West Palm Beach on December 2nd through the 4th. Jose completed their Citizenship Institute Program. Peter and Ray also serve as trustees. John Zumwalt received an award for being a past chairman.

On Thursday, November 21, CMA staff attended the ASCE Miami-Dade Branch Younger Member’s 2nd Annual Raise the Bar event at Batch Gastropub in Brickell. Carlos Tijerino, Sathvika Ramaji, E.I., Teresa Lewis, E.I., Patrick Kaimrajh, P.E., Jose Acosta, P.E., F.ASCE, Greg Mendez, P.E., and Nick Karpathy, E.I. spent the evening networking with other local civil engineering professionals. There were also guest speakers Rick Crooks (CEO of EAC Consulting) and Marisela Aranguiz, P.E. (Assistant Director of Capital Programs at WASD) who shared life lessons and their tips for success in the civil engineering industry.

Halloween Conference Room Decorating Contest at CMA

Congratulations to the Miami office who won our Halloween Conference Room Decorating Contest on Thursday!  The designs were judged by our office managers. CMA West Palm Beach Staff Volunteered at Quantum House

The CMA WPB office prepared and served dinner at Quantum House. QH is a caring and supportive home for families whose children are receiving treatment in Palm Beach County for serious medical conditions. They opened their doors in May 2001 to families and now have 30 rooms, serving more than 1,000 family members every year. QH is still the only hospital hospitality house serving children and their families this way between Fort Lauderdale and Orlando. CMA Vice President Jose L. Acosta, P.E., F.ASCE attended the 2019 Zweig Group Hot Firm + A/E Industry Awards Conference in Las Vegas October 4-6. The event is the industry’s largest and most comprehensive business conference for leaders and aspiring leaders of AEC firms in the U.S. Attendees networked, gained knowledge, and celebrated with the top firms in the industry. The conference agenda included topics on technology, leadership challenges, business planning, marketing methods, recruiting and retention, and growth strategies. Miami-Dade County League of Cities 9th Annual Best Practices Conference

CMA Staff Volunteer in International Coastal Cleanup

CMA participated in the International Coastal Cleanup at El Pardo Park in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea on Saturday September 21st and collected 33 pounds of trash! This was our second year participating! Our volunteers were David Castro, P.E., Jessica Diaz, E.I., Charmaine Emanuels, E.I., Megan Schmidt, Derrick Smith, CFM, LEED AP, Jennifer Smith, P.E., Ruben Soto and Johanna Zona. The International Coastal Cleanup began more than 30 years ago, when communities rallied together with the common goal of collecting and documenting the trash littering their coastline. Volunteers from states and territories throughout the U.S. and more than 100 countries come together each year and participate in a Cleanup event near them. 13th Annual Palm Beach Partners Business MatchMaker Conference & Expo

CMA attended the Broward Branch ASCE 50th Year Anniversary, Installation and Awards Banquet Thursday, Sept 12th. CMA Participated in Seacoast Softball Tourney

CMA, teamed with Holtz Consulting Engineers, participated in the Inaugural Seacoast Classic Softball Tournament on September 7.  CMA won two out of the three games.  Players from CMA included Brent Whitfield, P.E., ENV SP, Cris Betancourt, RLA, Jennifer Cook, Madeley Arriola Guerrero, EI, Marvin Moore, Mike Wood, Jennifer Smith, P.E., Derrick Smith, CFM, LEED AP, Joel Brownsey, P.E. and Suzanne Dombrowski, P.E., ENV SP. Other teams that participated were Seacoast Utility Authority, City of Palm Beach Gardens, Palm Beach Gardens Police Department, City of West Palm Beach Utilities, Martin County Utilities, South Florida Lawmen and Globaltec.  All proceeds went to Water for People. CMA Staff Attended ASCE YMLS Leadership Symposium

August 10-11, 2019

CMA Associate Engineers Sathvika Ramaji, E.I. and Nicholas Karpathy, E.I., ENV SP attended the ASCE Younger Members Leadership Symposium (YMLS) in Reston, VA this past weekend. The conference started with a tour of the Capitol and walking around the monuments in Washington, DC. The rest of the weekend included sessions on improving communication, management, networking and presentation skills. Aside from the sessions, time was also spent conversing with ASCE President-Elect Kancheepuram “Guna” N. Gunalan and networking with other young professionals from around the country.

CMA Awarded for City of Fort Lauderdale "Go Big Go Fast" Project

CMA received the Engineering Excellence Honor Award from The American Council of Engineering Companies of Florida (ACEC-FL). The Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) acknowledges Florida engineering firms for their ground-breaking applications and intricate projects. CMA President Peter Moore, P.E., F.ASCE, ENV SP, LEED AP and Senior Engineer and Project Manager Daniel Davila, P.E. accepted the award for the “Go Big, Go Fast Infrastructure Improvement Program- 30” Force Main Repair” project for the City of Fort Lauderdale. Cris Betancourt, RLA Is the First Professional Landscape Architect to Graduate From FELI

CMA Director of Planning and Landscape Architecture Cris Betancourt, RLA recently graduated from the Florida Engineering Leadership Institute (FELI). FELI was created with the mission to transition engineering professionals into community professionals and leaders within our societies, communities, and workplaces. Through its initial 10-month class, FELI enhances the leadership skills of its participants and sets out a clear pathway to put these skills into practice serving our profession and our communities. The program includes programming on issues critical to Florida, leadership skills assessment and training, and relevant information on Florida’s history, demography, diversities, and opportunities. Miami-Dade ASCE Branch Vice President and CMA Associate Engineer Carlos Tijerino attended an event with ASCE National president elect Kancheepuram N. Gunalan, Ph.D., P.E., D.GE, F.ASCE at Titan America Structural Testing Laboratory at FIU on June 5. A social event was also held at Pisco y Nazca Ceviche Gastrobar where Dr. Guna gave a presentation for his 2020 Presidential vision.

The Broward chapter event was held on May 10 at Palm Aire Country Club in Pompano Beach, the Palm Beach chapter event was held on May 17 at the Fazio Course in Palm Beach Gardens and the Miami chapter event was held on May 24 at the Miccosukee Golf and Country Club in Kendale Lakes that raised an estimated $10,000 for scholarships.

The team served dinner to those living in the Broward Partnership Shelter and also prepared sandwiches.

CMA Participated in CANSTRUCTION Fundraiser

May 20, 2019

CMA teamed with Johnson-Davis Construction to participate in a fundraiser event called CANSTRUCTION, with proceeds going to the Palm Beach County Food Bank. This year’s event was held in Palm Beach Gardens, FL at The Gardens Mall from May 6-19. Our team built their sculpture at the mall on May 5 from 6pm-12am.  At the end of the two-week exhibition, each one of the sculptures was “decanstructed” and the food donated to the Palm Beach County Food Bank. In 2017, over 32,000 pounds of food was collected from these sculptures and distributed to hungry individuals and families in our community. Teams competed in a 7-mile relay race around the Island City with exchange points throughout the Middle River. The race started at Colohatchee Boat Ramp and finished at Richardson Historic Park where participants were greeted with lunch and a trophy ceremony. NUCA Top Job Award

April 1, 2019

Johnson Davis won the NUCA Top Job Award for the Aerial Crossings Replacement project in the City of Margate. This award is presented to projects that are unique and completed with excellent results.

Chen Moore and Associates and Carollo Engineers provided design, permitting, and construction oversight services for the replacement of 8 water and force main aerial utility crossings at 6 different locations throughout the City of Margate service area. The project involved the design and construction administration of the pipeline replacements including external coating, supports, fan guards, air release valves, isolation valves, and connections to existing pipes.

On Sunday, March 17, CMA Associate Engineers Sathvika Ramaji, EI and Carlos Tijerino volunteered at the ASCE 10th Annual Miami-Dade Engineering Encounters Bridge Design competition held at the Miami-Dade County Youth Fair. This event challenges middle school division and high school division students to design a functional bridge utilizing design software that allows virtual testing and analysis of their design. Through this competition we hope to inspire young students to become interested in the engineering and STEM majors as they start applying for colleges and deciding their career fields. The first place winner of each division will have the opportunity to compete at the State level in Orlando, FL. CMA was one of the event sponsors. Chen Moore and Associates staff participated in the ASCE Broward Third Annual Engineer for a Day event last week. The student outreach program was created to encourage high school students to consider civil engineering as a future career field. The day was divided up into two sessions. The morning session was hosted at the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 4 offices in Fort Lauderdale, where students interacted with local engineering university students, professors and other professional engineers, where they learned about the academic requirements necessary for completing an engineering degree and general information in the engineering field. In the afternoon session, the students split up into smaller groups and toured local engineering firms, including Chen Moore and Associates’ Fort Lauderdale office. Jose L. Acosta, P.E., F.ASCE served as a co-chair for the Future City Competition at FIU College of Engineering. 42 schools started the competition in August and seven moved on to compete in the South Florida Region competition. Future City is a national competition in which groups of middle school students present their idea of what a city would look like 100 years from now and how that city would effectively deal with the demands of a global sustainability problem. The project involves several components: a virtual model of the futuristic city, a physical model of a section of the city, an essay and a presentation. CMA Held Our Commitment to Participate in More Community Service Projects in 2018

In the past couple of years, Chen Moore and Associates made a resolution to participate in more community service projects. We are proud to have kept our resolution and projects from 2018 include:

  • MLK Day of Service - Painted a school in Miami and organized school supplies through Leadership Florida Connect

  • EF2D Engineering Family Fun Day – Helped students with engineering skills

  • Feeding South Florida – Participated in the Annual Outrun Hunger 5K Event

  • MATHCOUNTS – Volunteered in a math competition for students

  • HOPE South Florida – Volunteered feeding homeless people through the Shared Meal Program and clothing donations

  • HOPE South Florida – Held clothing drive

  • Habitat for Humanity – Prepared infrastructure at new Habitat Houses

  • Ballroom Blitz – Supported and participated in the Ballroom Blitz benefitting the West Palm Beach Athletic Club

  • Relay For Life – Started fundraiser and raised money for American Cancer Society

  • United Way  –  Supported the United Way green initiative and participated in the 27th Annual Day of Caring in Broward County

  • STEM Presentation – Presented on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) at a middle school

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters – Hosted students in the office and taught them about the profession

  • Education Foundation of Palm Beach County Red Apple School Supplies – Hosted school supply drive

  • Cross-Fit Competition – Supported a fundraiser for breast cancer

  • International Coastal Cleanup – Beach cleanup throughout the Tri-County area and river cleanup in the Orlando area

  • Hurricane Donations – Collected items of need for Hurricane Michael victims in the Panhandle area

  • Men of Style – Our President and CEO Peter Moore, P.E., F.ASCE, ENV SP, LEED AP was a contender in the Men of Style charity event and represented and benefitted Leadership Broward

  • Adopt a Park – Cleaned up a park a minimum of 4 times per year

  • Lotus House – Provided clothing donations

  • Broward Engineer for a Day Event – Through ASCE, hosted a group of students to educate them on our profession

  • Wear Pink Day – To support breast cancer awareness

  • Feeding South Florida – Thanksgiving food drive, CMA was one of the winners of the Food Frenzy competition earning the title of “Thanksgiving Hero”

  • Covenant House Florida – Sponsorship for Sleep Out: South Florida; to help build awareness of the homeless youth population

  • Adopt a Family – Provided holiday gifts for a family in need in West Palm Beach
